Breakthrough City

A bunch of really rich people introduced today the "Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences,"  an annual $3 million award "to recognize excellence in research aimed at curing intractable diseases and extending human life."

Today, 11 inaugural winners were announced, and two of them were from Boston (one from MIT, one from MIT/Harvard). They are Eric Lander, who works on human genetics and disease, and Robert Weinberg, a cancer researcher.

The prize founders say the organization is "dedicated to advancing breakthrough research, celebrating scientists and generating excitement about the pursuit of science as a career." 

The thrill of discovery is one reason I love my job working in a lab, even though I am just a tech. Who knows what scientists will learn tomorrow?
